Special Instructions:
Course Information:

- In order to pass this course successfully, you will be required to plan and teach a 10-minute mini-lesson: a toolbox talk or a similar short, focused piece of training.

- Please do NOT prepare a lesson in advance. Instead, you will be provided choices in what you can plan and teach on the day. By planning and delivering a lesson on the day of the course, you will have the chance to apply the 7-step instructional process and new instructional skills and knowledge to enhance the impact of your training.

- You will use a seven-step template to help you to plan your lesson. The steps are:

1. Focus Gain trainees’ attention, establish the importance of the topic.

2. Objective Describing what trainees will have learned or be able to do by the end of the lesson

3. Link Link the lesson to trainees’ existing knowledge and skills

4. Present new learning This is the core learning of the lesson in which you overview the key points/ideas, demonstrate the new skill.

5. Practice-Feedback This is where the trainees engage with the new information or practice the skill with the trainer’s and other trainees’ support and feedback.

6. Assess Trainees show what they know

7. Debrief Summarize the learning, link the lesson to future learning, give closure to the lesson

- You will be given enough time to understand the seven-step process; plan and get feedback on your lesson plan; and deliver and debrief it.

- Your lesson is not expected to turn us into experts on a particular topic. The emphasis is on the teaching and getting learners involved.

- The class environment in TST is always supportive and trainee-centered. Seating in the classroom will be arranged so small groups can work “hands-on” together throughout the day. Your TST peers will also be very supportive during your mini-lesson and the lessons that people deliver are always positive experiences.
