The BCCSA established a Research, Development and Opportunity Fund (RDO). This special operating fund allows the organization to be responsive to emerging construction industry issues not allocated in their annual budget.
Money allocated to the fund comes from surplus revenue from BCCSA safety training and product sales. The fund maximum is set at $1,350,000. At the end of each fiscal year any monies collected over and above the $1,350,000 account cap is applied as revenue to the following year's WorkSafeBC funding.
There is no application funding limit however the balance of the account is dependant on current projects and the amount of revenue earned by the end of the year.
This fund is managed by the Executive Director and the Board of Directors. It supports new partnerships, research projects and activities relevant to the construction industry with a focus on occupational health and safety.
All requests for project funding must be submitted by completing the Research, Development and Opportunity Fund (RDO) Application. This application is sent to the Executive Director who will recommend to the RDO Committee whether to proceed with a presentation to Committee. If the Committee supports the recommendation, a presentation by the applicant will be arranged; otherwise, the applicant will be notified that their application has not been accepted. In cases where the RDO Committee disagrees with the Executive Director's recommendation, the Committee may vote to override the recommendation and either request a presentation from the applicant or decline the application, as appropriate. If the RDO Committee approves the application, it will be included in the agenda for the next Board meeting for a final decision.
Request → ED Review → RDO Committee Review → Board Approval → Approved Project
If the submission is not approved at any phase of the review process, the applicant will be advised within 15 business days of the decision, along with an explanation for outcome.
If the submission is approved by the Board of Directors, the applicant will be advised within 15 business days of the board meeting and the BCCSA will set up an initial planning session.
The Board of Directors have the right to apply special conditions on project approvals on a case by case situation such as funding release approvals, additional party involvement, etc. It will be the decision of the applicant to accept these conditions or remove their application.
All applicants must reside in the Province of BC unless special approval is granted. Only construction-related projects that directly benefit BCCSA members will be considered. BCCSA's RDO Fund is intended to support the development of resources and tools that benefit BCCSA members and the broader BC construction community. Any resources developed through the RDO Fund must be made freely available to all BCCSA members upon completion. The fund is not intended to provide financial gain to third-party service providers.
